The following table outlines achievements against the 2007 Spatial Milestones as part of efforts to develop a national spatial capability by 2010.

Milestones Achievements
Determine the operational arrangements in place to enable NSIM to undertake the implementation of a national spatial capability NSIM amended its governance structure to more closely align with the expectations of the strategic level committees to which it reports. A revised Terms of Reference was endorsed by the National Counter-Terrorism Committee. A spatial coordination group was established to provide direction on projects and activities and continue spatial work between NSIM meetings.
Clear statement of user requirements across CIP, CT and EM A user requirements workshop was conducted in 2007 with the resultant report providing valuable insight into spatial information needs across agencies. This milestone will also be progressed by the Common Operating Picture (COP) trial.
Clear national gap analysis on capabilities This milestone will be validated through the forthcoming COP trial. Many milestones were interdependent and so could not be progressed in isolation. The COP trial will result in a greater definition of specific issues associated with a national spatial capability.
Nationally endorsed set of common operating principles This milestone will also be progressed by the COP trial. Preliminary work on this milestone identified the need to undertake a COP trial.
Awareness and engagement program delivered in all jurisdictions and levels Awareness packs, comprising a Spatial Awareness DVD and fact sheets, have been developed to promote a national spatial capability across Australia. An NSIM webpage has been developed to provide a focal point for the dissemination of information and resources to the community. About 1500 copies of the Spatial Strategic Plan 2007-2010 have been distributed.
Nationally shared training program Funding for a scoping exercise and training needs analysis was secured in December 2007.
Spatial information is an objective for all exercises The use of spatial information as an objective was incorporated into a number of exercises. This occurred on a national level in preparation for Mercury 08.
National spatial ‘library’ architecture defined and costed A discussion paper on a national spatial data library was developed and distributed. This milestone will be progressed by the COP trial.
APEC 07 effectively used spatial information for planning and implementation Spatial information was well used during the planning and the conduct of APEC, especially for decision-making by jurisdictions and agencies. Different geographic information systems (GIS) were used, highlighting a range of possible, compatible approaches.
Nationally endorsed policy and complementary governance process in place NSIM’s internal governance arrangements were clarified through amendments to its Terms of Reference.
