It has long been held that, “a picture’s worth a thousand words”. As an image can more powerfully communicate a concept than many words, the Department of Planning and Infrastructure (DPI) of the Northern Territory Government has worked to establish a comprehensive and credible spatial information capability.
A significant element in establishing a spatial capability is the incorporation of ‘NT Visualiser’, which acts as a tool to enable users to view data from a wide range of custodians. This spatial capability is now actively used by other government agencies including the Northern Territory Police Fire & Emergency Services (NTPFES).
The introduction of NT Visualiser to the NTPFES has enabled superior decision making across the spectrum of prevention, preparedness, response and recovery (PPRR). NT Visualiser was used extensively within NTPFES as a planning tool for APEC EMM8, the Arafura Games, the V8 Supercars event, the Darwin Cup Carnival and other major events. It is also used in exercise development, briefing notes and operational plans and has featured as part of the management of real time emergency responses. Further, NT Visualiser has provided significant information for planning, logistical arrangements and infrastructure development associated with the Australian Government’s Northern Territory Emergency Response Taskforce.
The foundation spatial information architecture and back-end information management infrastructure, as designed by DPI, has provided the potential to expand the integration of NT Visualiser into the day-to-day business of all NT government agencies. This important initiative is consistent with e-government policy outcomes, and will maximise information sharing and, as a consequence, enhance decision-making across government.
The integration of the technology in the Northern Territory has brought about significant efficiencies in business practices and the ability to provide a superior response to emergency and disaster events. The Northern Territory believes that the early adoption of the technology has placed it in an advantageous position to better manage the challenges of the future.
